DONA... DONA... DONA...
Do Not Miss This...
I must have met Dona in the early 90's and I'm sure it was at the legendary Blues Club Manny's Car Wash, located at 88th and 3rd Ave. Once you hear Dona - and once you see her perform, you have to go back. I've seen her play solo... with Johnny Johnson and with Shamika Coperland. And she certainly has the "stuff" to stand her own ground!
She has given me permission to play some of her ORIGINAL tunes here at Strange Brew... so ENJOY and be sure to catch her act. http://www.donaoxford.com
DONA BIO: (read on)
Tina! Janis! Aretha! Doña? That's right! There's a new one-name wonder in town! Also known as "The Boogie Woogie Woman" for her two fisted piano playing, Doña Oxford is fronting one of the hottest Rock & Roll bands of the 21st century! The word is out that when Doña sings, her vocal cool gets her audience all heated up!! It's all attitude, sultry good looks and a down and dirty beat that makes it happen when Doña (pronounced doan-ya) hits the stage!
Of English, Dutch, and German descent, Doña is the offspring of a trumpet playing Episcopal Priest father and a cabaret singer mom (her best pal). Born on June 2, this Gemini is a seasoned performer. She started playing piano at age five, on a one octave toy piano.
She took lessons at school without her parents knowledge. By age 6 it was apparent that Doña was serious. Her mother bought her an upright Baldwin piano - her first real piano, and by 7 she was giving concerts at school.
Along the way, Doña took center stage with another talent - singing. Doña strengthened her pipes and learned her stage savvy with years of theatrical work; both regionally and Off-Broadway. With her theatrical interest, she went to New York City to study Drama at NYU, Tisch School of the Arts. But it was her lust for Blues and Rock & Roll that inspired Doña to leave the theater business and set out for the New York Nightclub Scene!
It was there that Doña honed her craft...
She quickly climbed the musical ladder to play with such legendary performers as Keith Richards, Hubert Sumlin, Kenny Neal, Pinetop Perkins, Shirley Dixon, Commander Cody, Shemekia Copeland, Bernard Allison, Bob Margolin, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Michael Hill, Popa Chubby, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and her idol, the father of the rock & roll piano, Johnnie Johnson!
It was also there that she met the great Guitarist Arthur Neilson, with whom she formed a long partnership and friendship. Together they set out on tour to promote an independent album release, "Rowena Said..."! They were featured on Dan Aykroyd's HOUSE OF BLUES radio show, Japan's #1 radio show, PAZZ & JOPS, and quickly received recognition as one of New York City's finest blues bands.
Together they teamed up with the late Johnny "Clyde" Copeland's daughter, Shemekia Copeland, who had just finished her debut album release, "Turn The Heat Up!" on Alligator Records. After great exposure touring with Shemekia around the world, Doña is currently pursuing her dream as a solo performer and frontwoman for her own band.
